Description
This book is the second in the "Captain Lucy" series by Aline Harvard. The introduction describes the book as follows: "To those who made friends with Lucy Gordon on Governor’s Island it will seem a great change to find her, in this second story, so far away from home. She is only one of thousands, though, to whom a few months of the great war brought more changes than they ever thought could be crowded into a lifetime." In this introduction, the author explains how Captain Lucy's fortunes were altered by the first world war. Moreover, Captain Lucy is not described as exception, but "one of thousands" affected by the First World War. This introduction serves two purposes: to explain how Captain Lucy finds herself in France, and to show how her life is not so different from those of her young readers. Through Captain Lucy, young readers would have the opportunity to imagine themselves rescuing their own fathers from German captivity, forging a secret path through enemy lines, and being awarded for their valor.
