Children's Books

Description

This collection includes novels intended for children from the late nineteenth century until 1948, which reflect broad ideas regarding gender, athletics, and heroism directly before and after the First World War.

This selection is intended to reflect books which would have been popularly produced and widely available to young readers during the years which preceded the war and the years that directly followed it, as a means of capturing a generation of children's literature during this tumultuous era.

In the description section, each entry is described, with context for their place within a series and some idea of the book's contents, along with key quotes drawn from each book.

The tags divide the books in this collection into the categories, "marketed for boys," "marketed for girls," regional setting, creator, and series-specific categories.

Each entry includes the year of publication, in order to reflect a complete timeline.

Effort has been made to locate widely available scans of these short novels through the Library of Congress, Project Gutenberg, Archive.org, or HathiTrust, located in the Website category.

When an object is located in the curator's personal collection, this status is noted in the Source category.
